Versatile Comunications Provides Boston Marathon “Race Day Network” For 14th Year

March 18, 2010

Marlboro, MA –Versatile Communications, a premier IT infrastructure integrator that specializes in high-availability, interoperable network server and storage solutions, announced today that they will once again be providing the data and communications “Race Day Network” for the 2010 Boston Marathon.

The Boston Marathon, managed by the Boston Athletic Association (BAA), is the world’s oldest and most prestigious road race event. Versatile Communications has been providing the critical data and communications, “Race Day Network”, for the BAA since 1997. With 25,000 participants and a course running through eight cities and towns, the data and communications network must keep event staff and emergency responders connected and provide real-time race information. The network must also support the needs of onsite media representatives while delivering live international television feeds and Internet broadcasts.

“Like the marathon itself challenges its runners, we challenge our network year over year, and this year – 2010 – will be no exception,” says John Burgholzer, Technology Coordinator for the Boston Marathon, BAA. “Fortunately, for the past 13 years, our technology partner, Versatile has provided us with the networking service and support we need to meet our ever-changing technological challenges and improvements.”

“The Race Day Network we establish for the Boston Marathon is complex and multifaceted,” say Kevin Meany, CTO of Versatile Communications. “Like many enterprises, the Boston Marathon needs high availability, precise performance, tight security and a seamless, customized user experience. The difference from other enterprises, of course, is the implementation window of only six days and the criticality of the six hour race window – but we like a challenge.”

“Seamless races, accurate results, global publicity and successful sponsor programs foster the longevity of the marathon and boost the financial prospect of the community,” says Meany. “We’re proud to have played a key role by delivering Boston’s Race Day Networks for 14 years…and counting.”
